What is the best way for local government to promote must-see options and hidden gems?
A website is a great shop window for promoting your areas must-see sites and hidden gems but are most really geared up to be used during a visit? A leaflet is handy to carry around, but how much meaningful information can you print on one piece of paper?
One of the most efficient methods of offering visitor’s focussed content for any given place is with a GPS-triggered travel app. Why?
- It uses a phone, and everyone carries one of them around (no hardware or printing costs for you)
- An app notifies users when they have reached a point of interest and delivers content related to that place (no searching or scrolling needed)
- Updates are simple and can be pushed in real time (no heart attacks when you spot an error after you’ve just printed 10,000 leaflets!)
- Content can be layered and delivered in a variety of media to suit all learning styles (personally I’m a visual learner but you might be aural or kinesthetic).
I could go on but you get the picture!
Imagine
Imagine an app that lists all of those must-see options and hidden gems you are keen to promote. Imagine each one having its own page with text, images, audio, offers, even games. Imagine those places linked up with action-packed, fun-filled walking/driving tours, trails and itineraries. Imagine taking all the hard work out of the hands of the visitor and letting the app show them exactly where they need to go. Imagine promoting museums, gardens and other attractions alongside places to eat, drink and shop.</p
This is your branded, content-rich one-stop shop and it’s all available on your visitor’s phones to pull out and consult when they need to. For new visitors it’s an important familiarisation tool. For regular visitors and locals it’s a chance to discover places they never knew existed on their doorstep.
Mission
This is what AT Creative have been doing for local governments in the UK for over a decade. Sure, the technology has moved on and our app platform has evolved but User Experience has always been at the heart of our mission. We’ve published over 100 apps covering everything from small villages to whole National Parks. Our platform is that flexible, and robust, and proven. Just take a look at some of these case studies. You’ll read some great testimonials as you explore each one. Customer service is at the heart of our mission too.

The app works offline and offers a generous selection of free trails, along with premium paid experiences for those seeking even more adventure.
Places and Trails
We launched our own app – Places and Trails (available on the App Store and Google Play) – to offer local government organisations with smaller budgets or those who must focus their resources on other priorities the opportunity to publish a trail without having their own app. It has its pros, namely cross-promotion of each trail and a much lower price point. On the downside the focus of your trail can be lost amongst all of the others. It’s a pay off but with new clients coming on board almost immediately we know it was the right move to make, because we listened to our customers. That’s what we do.
The app currently showcases self-guided trails in Great Britain, but because our platform is flexible we can make the Places and Trails app cover the whole world, if needed. Likewise, your own dedicated app can simply cover the geographical area, themes and stories you want it to.
