A location-aware, Augmented Reality (AR) iOS and Android app that encourages visitors to explore the maritime history of the seafront at Minehead, Somerset.
Bonus geo-located AR content
Visitors to Minehead who have downloaded the Minehead Maritime Mile app unlock bonus content as they walk along the mile-long seafront. 3D models of some of Minehead’s iconic maritime history are brought to life with Augmented Reality, and archive videos reveal how Minehead used to look in yesteryear.
The App also features a quiz, with a prize for those who complete it, and souvenir selfie frames to share with friends, family and followers.

See how the AR works
To complement the five interpretation panels installed along the seafront, the client wanted to include an interactive visitor experience element that utilised Augmented Reality. Having met the client, walked along the seafront and taken receipt of the branding guidelines, a content strategy and functional specification was devised for the app. Once agreed, we built the iOS and Android app, implementing the AR and quiz functionality as new features into our Places and Trails native app software. At the same time we began creating the 3D models.
Following onsite testing we refined several elements of the AR e.g. the scale and loading position of the 3D models to enhance the experience. Visitors can unlock the models (and archive video) when they reach one of the interpretation panels.
