GPS & Bluetooth triggered app guiding visitors around Gower’s premier visitor attraction, and its environs. Features multilingual content and offline mapping.
Set in the heart of the Gower Peninsula, Gower Heritage Centre is the premier visitor attraction of the area. The rural life museum is based around a working 12th century water mill.
We were commissioned to develop a digital visitor guide that would enhance the visitor experience and provide engaging interpretation for the key points of interest. The site has poor mobile coverage and limited wifi at reception.
Having undertaken a scoping visit we proposed an iOS and Android app that was fully operational offline. Because some of the key exhibits were very close together we couldn’t rely on GPS to accurately trigger the content so we installed Bluetooth beacons at each location. An offline map, using Open Street Maps data and enhanced with a floorplan, of the museum helps guide visitors around the site. Map pins change colour when you reach a point of interest and a notification is alerted on the device.
We worked closely with the client to develop the content and translate it into seven further languages. The language selector within the app detects which default language the visitor’s device is set to and serves the app content in that language (if available). All users can also choose the option of accessing the content in Welsh. A total of eight languages are available in the app. All content can be easily updated via our Content Management System.
The app also features a number of walking trails that start at Gower Heritage Centre and take visitors to other nearby sites, such as the iconic Three Cliffs Bay. GPS tracks visitors in real time as they follow the route.
