The history of Leighton-Linslade brought to life.
Strolling down Leighton Buzzard’s High Street into the wide Market Square takes you through 1,000 years of history, and thanks to the Buzzard Trails iOS and Android app, into the lives of some of the town’s most famous and intriguing characters.
It will take around 45 minutes to complete the Living History Trail. Along the way you’ll visit the home of Mary Norton, author of the internationally-famous Borrowers books. Mary drew inspiration for the enchanting world of adventure she created for her tiny protagonists from her childhood home. And an author of a different genre, Alexander Muddiman, founded the Leighton Buzzard Observer in 1861. Visit his former offices.
And whilst Mary Bassett may today be best remembered by the primary school named after her, it was her groundbreaking work with Leighton Buzzard’s disabled community in the 19th century that this philanthropist is rightly celebrated.
The interactive Buzzard Trails app also contains a children’s trail, souvenir selfies to share with friends and family, and a fun quiz to test your knowledge of the town and its former inhabitants. Use the map to find your way from place to place and learn the fascinating stories, view old photos and listen to audio recordings as you explore Leighton-Linslade’s commercial centre.
I just wanted to send you a quick note to say thanks for all the support you have given to get the trail app underway. I’ve loved working on this project and I’m looking forward to celebrating the launch and seeing what people think of it.
