Six interconnected walking trails exploring the civilian and military history of Aldershot.
Stories automatically appear as you follow each trail. Audio commentaries, historic images and text tell the story of Aldershot and its place in history as the ‘Home of the British Army’, focussing on people, places, buildings, and events.
Along the Town Trail you’ll find interactive features including a set of drums to play and an Augmented Reality image gallery to help bring history to life.
A sister Rushmoor Borough Council app for Farnborough is now also available.
“We recently used AT Creative to design our app and companion website for our Heritage Trails project. It turned out to be quite a complex job with lots of fixes required to get to the end product but nothing was too much trouble for Dan and his team in ensuring that we had the very best outcome for our project – Thanks Dan!”

Augmented Reality Image Gallery
One of the real eye-catching features of this app is through the use of Augmented Reality (AR). Visitors to Westgate Shopping Precinct, formerly the Warburg Cavalry Barracks, are prompted to enter a AR Gallery. This is done by scanning the ground with the device and when it is lifted to eye level a number of images can be seen floating in the ether, like a virtual picture gallery.
These images depict scenes from the barracks, including a visit from Sir Winston Churchill, and are orientated in the direction of where the photographer was looking when they were taken. This means you are literally standing in the footsteps of the original camera operator. You can walk up to each image and explore it in detail, and by tapping on an image more information is revealed. You can see the AR Gallery working in this video.
The app’s content managers can add and edit images, plus adjust the location, size and orientation, in the Places and Trails CMS.
