A location-aware walking trails app designed to share the geological history of Ingleborough, Yorkshire Dales, featuring offline mapping.
Explore the 500 million year geological story of the Ingleborough area in the Yorkshire Dales with six geology-themed walking trails. During that period tectonic plate movements have seen the area pushed northwards from near the artic circle, and as a result the environmental conditions have changed enormously. The rocks and fossils reveal the history of these changes.
The Ingleborough Geological Trails app guides walkers along the trails, highlighting a total of 60 key points of interest along the way. Each complemented with wonderful photos and diagrams.
Magnificent mapping
This app is a fantastic example of the mapping in our Places & Trails app software. Online mapping is provided by Google Maps (satellite and street view), but only works when you have wifi or mobile network.
The offline mapping is unique, combining Ordnance Survey Open Data with the British Geological Survey’s bedrock data to provide a visually stimulating and informative map layer. The map legend and additional timeline further help interpret the landscape below your feet.
In order to help app users understand the geology below their feet, and enjoy tailored in-app offline mapping we used Ordnance Survey Open Data and merged it with the British Geological Survey bedrock layer to create a visually stunning and useful map, with multiple zoom layers. A map key is available to help interpret the different colours across the area.
